MCA CO-SPONSORING
Dranesville Commmunity Budget Meeting
Monday, March 11, 2024, at 7 pm
McLean Community Center

Despite considerable and sincere efforts to cut costs, our County Executive’s FY 2025 proposed budget includes a four-cent increase in the property tax rate, from $1.095 to $1.135 per $100 of a home’s assessed value. Assessed values of homes in greater McLean generally rose by 2% to 10%.
Do you want to learn the reasons for the proposed tax increase? Come to the Dranesville Community Budget Meeting co-sponsored by Supervisor Bierman and the MCA. For more information, contact Louise Epstein at b-t_committee@mcleancitizens.org.
The meeting will be recorded and posted in the MCA's Video Library.

CASINO UPDATE

The "Casino Bill", Senate Bill 675 has been held over.  What does that mean?  It is not dead - merely resting.  Unless Senator Marsden withdraws it, the bill will be considered in January 2025.  Our opposition efforts - attendance at Senator Boysko's Town Hall, letter writing campaigns, and traveling down to Richmond to lobby legislators bought us time to coordinate our efforts with other civic groups in Fairfax County to kill the Bill.
What is the plan?  Currently, large civic organizations serving communities located along the Silver Line are working to form a coalition.  Presently, our efforts are focused on getting our Board of Supervisors to say NO to a casino in Fairfax County.  NO will send a strong message to the General Assembly.  If you are up to writing another email, I suggest you go to https://norestoncasino.org/take-action-fairfax-co.  There is suggested wording on the website.  The current email campaign urges Chairman McKay, Fairfax County Supervisors, State Delegates and Senators to say NO Fairfax Casino.  The tool on the website is automated - option to edit email text and then fill in your name and address and hit send.   Takes less than a minute!
The website is managed by two Reston residents that ran the No Reston Casino campaign.  The Reston website is being used for the No Fairfax Casino campaign until we can launch a new NO Fairfax County website.  The website has several sign-up options including the option for the site to "not save" your contact information once you send the email described above.  If you do choose to sign up to receive alerts, your email address and other personal information will not be shared, sold or used for any other issue campaign.
With the goal of reducing the number of emails sent by MCA, casino updates will be made via the monthly "In the News" email and MCA's Facebook page.  So, Friend Us - https://www.facebook.com/mcleancitizens!  NO Casino signs and bumper stickers will be available in mid-March.  More info to come!

MCA TAKES EXCEPTION TO ARBOR ROW REZONING APPLICATION - REFUSAL TO PROVIDE ONSITE WORK FORCE UNITS

On February 7, 2024, the McLean Citizens Association’s Board of Directors adopted a resolution opposing a rezoning application for Arbor Row, Block C2 because of the developer’s unprecedented refusal to include Workforce Dwelling Units (WDU). Citiline Partners is asking to replace the previously approved rezoning for an office building with a residential building with ground floor retail and a public access park.  For more information and a link to the full resolution, go MCA's News / Articles.

The McLean Trees Foundation Neighborhood Trees Program Wants to Help You Plant A Native Tree in Your Yard!

Don’t know how to plant a tree but want to support the environmental health of your community?  Want your family to have the experience of planting a tree? We can help!  If you live in McLean, Virginia, the McLean Trees Foundation (a local nonprofit) will help you select an appropriate native tree for your property, deliver the tree to your yard, help you plant it, provide information on maintenance, and even check back with you a few months after planting to see how your tree is doing.  If you are interested in participating in this terrific program to boost our native tree canopy in McLean, please visit our website at https://www.mcleantreesfoundation.org/neighborhood-tree-program and submit your application.  A modest fee of $100 is assessed to cover the costs of the program (limit one 6-7 foot tree in 15 gallon container per household).

Interested in planting trees beyond just your yard? Consider becoming a Tree Champion and lead a neighborhood tree planting campaign! For more information, visit MTA's website at  https://www.mcleantreesfoundation.org/neighborhood-tree-program (scroll to bottom of page).

Just FYI – McLean Trees Foundation originated as an MCA tree planting program, became an MCA Committee, and outgrew the MCA and became a fully autonomous organization in 2004.
