MCA Seeks Transparency on 2017 Shooting of McLean Resident by Park Service

Published on 11/8/2018
In November 2017 the U.S. Park Service Police (Park Police) shot and killed an unarmed McLean resident Bijan Ghaisar, who was driving on the George Washington Parkway.

A Fairfax County Police Car followed the Park Police down the Parkway with a dashboard video camera recording their pursuit and the shooting.

Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler Jr. in December 2017 released the Fairfax County Police Car dashboard video camera recording the pursuit and the shooting.

A year later, the Park Police and the FBI have not provided information regarding the cause of the shooting or the identities of the police involved, which are customary in incidents of this nature.

At its November 7th meeting the MCA Board approved a Resolution urging the Park Police and the FBI to disclose promptly the reasons for the shooting, the identities of the police officers involved, and other findings of their investigations of the incident, in the interest of transparency and accountability to our community.

MCA President Dale Stein also drew attention to the continuing lack of resolution of this situation in a letter to the Editor of the Washington Post published on November 23, 2018.

The MCA Resolution also commends the Fairfax County Police Department and Chief Edwin Roessler for releasing the video of the incident in a timely manner.
