Dear MCA Members:
 
Happy Summer! Despite the heat, the MCA has been staying busy. As noted below, we recently co-hosted a legislative update and commendations event with State Senator Boysko and State Delegate Sullivan. As also as reported below, we worked with the Greater Tysons Citizens Coalition to hear from the County on office-to-residential conversions in Tysons and, separately, to obtain a public safety update from county police and first responders.

The MCA has long been concerned about the lengthy delays associated with the County’s process for approving sidewalks and other active transportation projects. The MCA Transportation Committee recently obtained from county staff an overview of this process and, in September, will hold a joint meeting with the MCA Budget and Taxation Committee to hear from the County Auditor regarding a recent report that recommended actions to expedite this approval process.

The MCA Board met on July 1 to elect two new members of the Board of Directors and to hear from our committee chairs and liaisons. The Board won’t meet in August, per our custom, so its next meeting will be on September 2.

MCA Co-Sponsors Resolution Town Hall
 
On June 30th, MCA was proud to co-host a Town Hall with Senator Jennifer Boysko and Delegate Rip Sullivan that included a commendation ceremony to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of community members. Senator Boysko and Delegate Sullivan provided an update on recent legislative events and recognized the notable McLean Area residents listed below, including two Fairfax County law enforcement officers, the long-time Chief of Staff to former Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust, and a long-term member of the Fairfax County School Board, all of whom were honored with resolutions during the 2026 General Assembly session. Planning & Zoning
Planning & Zoning Committee and GTCC Meet with County Staff re Tysons Office to Residential Conversions
 
MCA's Planning & Zoning Committee and the Greater Tysons Citizens Association (GTCC) held a virtual joint meeting on June 18th to address the planning underway to revisit the zoning designation for the areas largely along Tysons edges that are currently designated for office use only. Staff from Fairfax County's Department of Planning and Development's Policy and Development Branch gave a presentation on the Tysons Office-Designated Areas outlining the ongoing planning study for these areas and answered questions. Fairfax County is considering designating some mid-20th century office buildings, including several in Tysons, as having historic significance. See the Fairfax Postmodern Selective Survey Content Report.
 
Community Meetings to Discuss Accessory Living Units
 
The Planning & Zoning Committee wants to alert residents that County staff will hold two community meetings in July to discuss proposals for relaxing the requirements for Accessory Living Units (ALU)s contained in the zoning ordinance. Following is information concerning the meetings. Please visit the County Accessory Living Units website for live links to the meeting.

Monday, July 20, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.
 
The next meeting of the Planning & Zoning Committee will be August 25th at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Please contact Committee Chair Bob Perito for more information.
 
 
GTCC Hosts Annual Public Safety Update
 
On June 11th, GTCC, with the support of the MCA Public Safety Liaison, held its annual public safety meeting. As always, the meeting was full of informative updates, much of it positive. You can watch the meeting video or review the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) and Fairfax County Fire & Rescue presentations.
 
FCPD briefed GTCC members on its Connect Fairfax initiative whereby citizens may allow access to outdoor camera footage. The system has been successfully used to help solve crimes and also to locate missing children, elderly people, and others who are lost. Learn how you can participate in Connect Fairfax.
 
The next GTCC meeting will address the status of and challenges facing market rate, workforce and affordable housing in Tysons. It will be held on August 27th at 7:30 pm in person at the McLean Community Center. For more information, contact MCA Tysons Liaison/GTCC Chair Sally Horn.
