NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2025

From the President
Dear MCA Members and Interested Parties:

I went to Jammin Java on Thursday evening, and I thought the performer put into words exactly how I feel: There is just too much noise and chaos!  I hope everyone has their noise canceling headphones on and that you're finding ways to stay informed while preserving your mental health.

MCA is co-sponsoring Senator Boysko's and Delegate Sullivan's Post General Assembly Session Townhall on March 24 at the McLean Community Center.  A flyer will be sent out next week with more information.  This is our opportunity to thank our Number One No Fairfax Casino Champion, Senator Jenifer Boysko, for her bold support of her constituents' calls to Kill the Casino Bill!  She paid dearly for her opposition to the Casino Bill.
Senator Boysko was removed from key Senate leadership positions right after she testified at a House Finance Subcommittee meeting, where the bill was "passed over" for the year.  We also what to thank Delegate Sullivan who worked tirelessly on our behalf to influence key Delegates to oppose SB982.

I encourage you to attend Supervisor Bierman's Budget Town Hall on March 28 (see details below).  A decline in real estate tax revenues from commercial buildings combined with  projected reductions in federal and state funding make this a particularly challenging year.

Hope to see you at both events!

Linda Walsh
MCA President

MCA Needs YOU!!
McLean Citizens Association (MCA) Seeks Board Members

MCA is seeking candidates to serve on the MCA Board for the June 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, term. The link to the application is below.

MCA is non-partisan. We advocate for all citizens by amplifying residents’ voices and assisting with grassroots efforts with the goal of increasing the power of our individual votes.

MCA works on a remarkable range of issues. MCA has been at the forefront of the efforts to kill the casino bill, but most of MCA's work is not front page news. MCA Committees work on development issues, parks and recreational spaces, "active transportation" projects like bike paths and sidewalks, public safety, budget/spending issues, and school issues from cell phone policies to boundaries.

MCA is a 110-year-old organization. It is important for us to continue to evolve and effectively address and advocate for the citizens who live in the Greater McLean Area (Tysons, Falls Church, Vienna and McLean). With a seat on the Board, you or your neighbor can help us formulate and take positions on issues that impact your quality of life.

Directors on the 40-member Board serve either as a Homeowners/Citizens Association representative or as an At-Large member.

Interested citizens must submit a completed Application by March 15th to nominations@mcleancitizens.org

If you have any questions, please email the Nominating Committee or just send me an email or give me a call. Thank you for supporting MCA with your membership.

Regards,

Linda Walsh

MCA Endorses Draft WDU Guidelines

Fairfax County’s workforce housing policy recommends that development proposals with a residential component set aside a percentage of the units for households at affordable rates, administering programs to encourage the provision of both for-sale and rental Workforce Dwelling Units (WDUs).
Recognizing that the dream of buying a home in the McLean area has become more and more difficult to achieve, MCA has consistently supported the County's efforts to ensure access to for-sale WDUs.

The proposed WDU Guidelines, which implement the programs, include provisions limiting the ability of a developer of a mixed development to transfer a WDU obligation from for-sale units to rental units and ensuring that when transfers occur, access to family-sized units is preserved. In a letter to the Board of Supervisors, MCA explained its reasons for supporting these provisions and endorsed the proposed Guidelines.

Greater Tysons Citizens Coalition/Tysons Committee

Today's Tysons Office Market

On February 13th, the Greater Tysons Citizens Coalition (GTCC), in conjunction with the MCA Tysons Committee, held a meeting featuring a conversation about Tysons' commercial office market, one of the country's leading suburban office markets (watch the video).

The discussion featured two local experts, who provided their frank assessment of current market conditions along with some thoughts about the future: Jeff Roman, co-Managing Director, Stream Realty (presentation); and Victor Hoskins, President & CEO, Fairfax Economic Development Authority (presentation).

Jeff Roman's slidedeck contained so much current information that the Planning & Zoning Committee opened its February meeting with the video clip of his presentation.

McLean Trees Foundation Hosts Tree Talk

The McLean Trees Foundation, in collaboration with the Potowmack Chapter of the Virginia Plant Society, will be holding the following webinar on Tuesday, March 18, from 7:00-8:30 pm:

Congratulations! You have brought a new tree home. Now what?

This month we will talk about how to plant your new tree. What to do and, more importantly, what not to do. We will cover dealing with unruly roots, fertilization, soil amendments and pruning newly planted trees. The featured trees this month are the big berry producers like black gum and hackberry.

Please register here.

This is the third in a series of talks by Urban Forest Conservationist Jim McGlone, who holds a PhD in Human Ecology from Virginia Tech and recently retired from the Virginia Department of Forestry, where he spent 17 years as an Urban Forest Conservationist. Each talk begins with general information on an aspect of tree selection, planting, and care before covering a particular tree species or genus.

The recording of the first talk, "Why Trees Grow Where They Do and Oaks as Yard Trees," and the second talk, "Tree Selection and Small Trees," can be found, along with plenty of other information, on the McLean Trees Foundation website.
