How Much Off-Street Parking Should There Be?

Sally K Horn | Published on 4/9/2022
That’s the question that Fairfax County is exploring as it seeks to revamp its off-street parking ordinance and regulations. On April 5, County staff briefed the Greater Tysons Citizens Coalition and MCA’s Planning & Zoning, Transportation, and Environment, Parks & Recreation committees on possible adjustments to the amount of off-street parking required in various areas of the County, bicycling and electric vehicle parking, and environmental factors. Attendees stressed the need for ample off-street parking in medium-density business districts, such as the McLean Community Business Center (CBC), that are surrounded by lower-density car-dependent areas. They noted that those who live outside of the districts shop and dine within the districts -- and the merchants and restaurant owners within the districts depend on those outside of the districts for their livelihoods. See the MCA Video Library for the meeting recording and the Tysons Documents section for the briefing charts.
